1) New Cars Only. You may not race a car built for any prior Pinewood Derby.
2) Cars weight may not exceed 5 ounces (141.75 grams). Anything added to increase the cars weight must be fixed
in place. No moving weights or mercury. Cars that are overweight cannot race, but you may remove weight until you are at 5
ounces.
3) Cars may not be more than 7” long and 2 ¾” wide.
4) Official Parts Only. Each car must be built using the wood, wheels, and axels provided in the official Cub Scout
kits available at Fields Menswear. You may use non-official parts as long as they are identical to those in the official Cub
Scout kit.
5) Only official wheels and axels must be used and mounted in the pre-cut slots. Wheel bearings, washers, bushings,
and capped axels are not allowed. Car must have a 3/8” clearance.
6) Only dry lubricant, such as graphite, may be used. No graphite may be added after inspection.
7) Any type of cosmetic details, such as a steering wheel, are allowed as long as they do not violate length, width, weight
or other specifications.
8) Cars may be powered only by gravity. Cars must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
9) Each car must be checked in and inspected the day of the race. If the car does not pass inspection you will
be informed of the problem and allowed to fix the problem.
10) The
boys should build the car. Allow the scouts to do the work that you deem safe, such as sanding, painting, and applying
decals. There is an open division for adults and non-scout family members.
11) Remember:
This event is supposed to be fun. Good sportsmanship is expected.
12.) Addendum :24 Jan 06 : At the pack meeting,
it was suggested and agreed to allow the adults in the OPEN category to use any equipment as long as they stayed below 5 oz
. Obviously no mechanical starts, mercury, etc...This is the ADULT Open category only.
